Sweet Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia subtomentosa))
** I’m a NA native, but technically not native to NY. I should be used in your garden and not in wild areas.
While my kin, Black-Eyed Susan and Brown-Eyed Susan are biennial or short lived perennial. I am a long lived perennial so I live much longer.
I grow in a variety of habitats and can thrive in clay conditions.
My foliage and flowers have a nice sweet scent that I've heard is similar to the smell of sweet grass.
Butterflies, beetles and bees enjoy visiting my flowers.
I like forming large clumps with spectacular displays of many flowers.
My root system is fibrous and rhizomatous, but I have short rhizomes, which allows me to spread slowly.
Like other Rudbeckias, I'm the larval host of the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly.
