I’m native to NY state and Tompkins County
I'm best when grown in rich and consistently moist soils. I"m found in nature in wet swampy areas and along lakes and streams.
I will sucker, but you can use a spade to trim my roots to keep my from traveling too far.
I'm an attractive all season tree.
My stems turn bright red in winter and I love to show off my color when there's a white snowy backdrop. My best red stem color occurs on my new growth. If you like to see more red, you can prune older stems in the spring.
I have fragrant flowers in the spring. which attract pollinators.
My leaves in the fall are reddish orange fading to purplish.
My fruits are whitish with a blue tinge and are very attractive to birds.
